Chuck Close is a painter of photographs. He is well known for his larger then life faces. Early in his career Close worked with a photorealist style that captured the faces of his subjects in stark detail. Close uses the grid system to enlarge small images, without losing any detail.
Some years into his career, tragedy struck and he was left paralyzed from the neck down. He was able to regain some movement in his arms, and continued painting by strapping brushes to his arms.
His style changed from photorealistic to a more abstract style. Each grid square became its own individual painting, and instead of creating perfect copies, he began creating faces that are clear from further away, but right up close, nothing but color shapes.
Born in 1940, Close currently resides and works in New York.
