Enter in fill-in-flash. The reason we call it "fill in flash" is because it was created for the times you need to fill in a little more light. We use it to brighten up the foreground in back lit situations, or to take away dark shadows.

This is an example of a back lit situation where fill in flash allows us to see our subject.
This is an example of dark shadows across the face being lightened by fill in flash.
In class we did a short experiment. Each group needed to create two different situations. One with back lighting and one with dark shadows on the subjects face. The subject was to stay in the same pose as the photographer took one without flash and then one with fill in flash. Each group wanted to create the most extreme example as possible to clearly show the use of fill in flash.
