Zoom: Optical verses Digital

Zoom is fairly unique to digital cameras. There are two different types of zoom: Optical and Digital. Optical zoom is the actual camera's ability to zoom in due to its lens. Digital zoom is more of a magnification of what is seen. Because digital zoom only pretends to zoom in by magnifying electronically what it can see, it end up filling in a lot of holes with guesses, which leave a slightly grainy/blurry/pixelated image.
Optical zoom is a clear cut winner when it comes to detail and clarity, however the better the optical zoom in your camera, the bigger your camera will be. Remember that telephoto lenses are the big ones, that is because the actual lens has to be bigger to see farther.

Digital zoom allows you to compromise size and zoom although its not the best final product.
