The rule of thirds is a compositional trick to help position a subject outside of the center of your photograph. The way it works is this: Divide your picture plane into thirds both horizontally and vertically. It should look like a tic tac toe board. Where the lines intersect will be good placement for your emphasis. This will create a dynamic composition.
