What is Art?

Today in class we asked the question: What is Art? Students wrote down their definitions, only to be challenged by me. An idea that most students held on to was that art shows expression. But what about the paintings that are not expressive? And does art have to be paintings and sculptures? Does it matter how its made? Or is it more important why its made? Does it matter how the artist feels about it? Or does it matter what the audience feels? We discussed and argued these ideas back and forth, as we visited an art exhibit featuring paintings similar in outward appearance but very different in intent.
