Snapshot vs Photographs

For the purpose of this class, we have coined two terms: Snapshots and Photographs. For the purposes of this class, snapshot will refer to a cliche picture. For example, a typical cliche picture would be of a person or a group of Friends, set in the center of the picture frame, all smiling at the camera. Another cliche snapshot would be the "myspace self-portrait" when you hold your camera high above your head, gaze into the lens and pull the shutter. Cliche snapshots will further include shots of scenery that is similar or the same as everyone else.

A photograph then will be more thought out. It will show us something unique or overlooked. It will consist of strong composition, meaning the photographer set up the entire picture plane in a pleasing way using the elements and principles of art. Photographs tend to feel artistic, where as snapshots seem to be nothing special. Photographs also appeal to a much larger audience, although snapshots appeal usually to the specific person involved and their close Friends.

In this class we will be learning to take PHOTOGRAPHS. We will not be taking snapshots. Any questions? Can you tell which is which?
