Macro photography allows for a close up look at small subjects. It also creates a small depth-of-field, which means that the backgrounds tend to get blurry real quickly. Both of these functions make macro a good choice when desiring a more artistic feel. It magnifies and therefore shows us the world differently then we see it with our own eyes, and it softens the background which automatically creates an artistic feel. While you shouldn't use macro for EVERY photo you ever take, it is a good trick to have up your photographic sleeve.
Most digital cameras have the macro function which is represented by the small flower icon.
Today students were required to take 2 different Macro photos. One was to focus on texture, showing us a texture that we wouldn't normally look at or see. The second was to find an emphasis, focus in on it, and allow the background to blur away.
